Olympia is full of Design!
We’ve invited Olympia’s locally-owned businesses, the library, and other downtown businesses to highlight design and create unique programming to add diverse dimensions to Olympia Design Month. Some of amazing events were already underway and some were pulled together just for Olympia Design Month:
Northwest Green Home Tour (South Sound) | Organized by the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild
Saturday, May 4, 11-5 pm
O-POP is collaborating with the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild to highlight design and construction methods that make your existing or new home more eco-friendly. This year’s Green Home Tour will also feature higher density and “missing middle” housing to deepen understanding about how home placement impacts the environment. The tour will kick off our month of events.
South Sound Studio Tour | Organized by Hart James and Nicole Gugliotti
Saturday, May 4, 10-4 pm
Thurston County holds a wealth of creativity and talent. The South Sound Studio Tour will give the region a chance to learn about art and artist’s processes by visiting 26 artists’ studios. It will promote unity among local artists and expose the public to the value that art contributes to one’s life.
Design for a Great Public Place | Organized by the City of Olympia Parks, Arts, and Recreation

In 2010, Percival Landing won the prestigious Great Places in America Award from the American Planning Association – at the very moment it was torn up for reconstruction. Get the details on that story and more! Join City staff for an all-encompassing walking tour of Percival Landing, learning how environmental restoration, important vistas, public art, accessibility for all, and waterfront access all come together in this nationally recognized, locally beloved community gem.
Film: Coast Modern | Organized by the City of Olympia Heritage Commission and the Olympia Film Society
Thursday, May 16, 6:30 pm (doors), 7 pm (show)
Traveling along the Pacific North West coastline from LA to Vancouver, the film showcases the pioneers of West Coast Modernist Architecture, and the homes that have become their legacies. Mayor Selby will make a Heritage Awards presentation, and they will feature a screening of amazing historic film footage of Olympia. FREE ADMISSION!

In honor of Design Month, TRL’s Olympia Branch will showcase its vast array of design-related resources, including books, online learning materials, and film selections from Kanopy, its video streaming service. All of these resources are free to TRL card holders.
